Body language

Basically, a cockatoo only communicates with its body language and making sounds. The use of this body language and the understanding of it when observed in other cockatoos is innate to them. We as humans can learn how to understand this cockatoo body language, so we can understand its mental state and intentions. Cockatoos can learn to read human body language as well, but they are not as accurate as in their “own language”.

Excited and active (“happy”

When a cockatoo is active and excited, for example when it is playing or showing off, it will show this with its body language. It will put this crest feathers up and move a lot. Generally it will be very active and make excited noises. This can be seen as an happy confident cockatoo. The feathers on the side of the head are not erect, only the crest.

Sense of smell

The ability to smell of cockatoos is limited. In nature they depend on sight to find food and on sound to communicate with other cockatoos. The brain area that is used to process smell is very small in parrots and cockatoos, indicating that their sense of smell is not well developed.

Moluccan cockatoos are very popular in bird shows, in zoos and as pets because of their impressive size, beauty and intelligence. They are eager to learn new tricks and will master them quickly. They can also become very tame and affectionate to their human owners. Unfortunately, this species can also revert to self-mutilation, excessive screaming, feather plucking and aggression towards people. People think to buy a beautiful big bird, but instead get a bird that pulls out its own feathers, screams all day and it aggressive to it’s human caregivers. The Moluccan cockatoo is seen as one of the hardest species of bird to keep as a pet. It really needs a lot of attention to keep him busy and happy, a big cage or aviary and correct training.

Housing a cockatoo

A cockatoo can be housed in a cage or an aviary. A cage is used inside your house. An aviary can be seen as a very big cage, usually partly outdoors, with an indoor space that is sheltered against rain, wind and the cold. There are all kinds of cages and aviaries for sale. You can also have your cage of aviary custom build to fit the needs of you and your bird(s).

Cage size

A cage or aviary is never too big for a cockatoo. The more space it has, the better! If you can fit a larger cage in your house, please opt for this larger cage. Your cockatoo will be happier in this cage, making it a much nicer experience to have it as your companion. A larger enclosure will allow your bird more space to move and more place for toys and perches.
Advantages of cages
  • Easier to place because it takes less space
  • Easier to clean
  • Indoor housing prevents your bird from being to cold or too hot
  • Less expensive than aviaries
  • You do not need outdoor space (e.g. garden)
  • It’s easier to spend more time with your bird as you and your family are often indoors
